The $168,000 bottle of wine

Just in time for the New Year, a wine that costs almost as much as the average American home. Wine.com is selling one of 12 limited edition bottles of “Ampoules of Penfolds 2004 Block 42 Cabernet Sauvignon.” It’s a rare, single-vineyard wine from a Cabernet Sauvignon vine that was transported from France to Australia in the 1830s, says Rich Bergsund, CEO of Wine.com.

Gwendolyn Osborn, the director of education at Wine.com, says it’s the ideal low-cost refresher — “very dry and very crisp…a perfect party wine.” Oh, and she says it’s worth keeping in mind for movie night: “It goes great with popcorn!”

Wine Ventures are on the vine – again

While neither of those two problems are going away, the resurrected Wine.com has proven that consumer openness to new ways of buying wine may, at least, be improving. Wine.com CEO Rich Bergsund — who rescued the company in 2006 when it had one week of cash left — said his company has been profitable for three years. It will do $80 million in revenue this year and had its biggest single day of sales — $1.5 million — on Dec. 17. “The big picture is that the wine business is a $35 billion U.S. market,” Bergsund said. “There’s plenty of room for other ways of doing it.”
