The economy may be in a funk and consumer spending in a slump, but there’s one glass that seems to be more than half full — flutes of Champagne to be precise. After seeing sales tumble as the recession hit, Champagne shipments were up nearly 22 percent comparing the first six months of this year to the same period in 2010, with a total of 7.5 million bottles shipped to the U.S. as of June, according to the Washington-based Champagne Bureau.

According to Cam Fortin, Mobile Website Project Manager at wine.com, 8% of the popular wine buying site’s web traffic comes from mobile phones. An additional 5-6% comes from tablets. That’s no small feat considering the average iPad order value is 50% higher than the site average.

Wine.woot.com was offering five-packs of Silverado Vineyards 2009 Sauvignon Blanc for $59.99. At WineShopper.com, selections included a Novelty Hill 2008 Cabernet Sauvignon at $14.99—40% below the suggested retail price.

App Roadmap: Retailers accept complexity as the price of cool, serving consumers the mobile apps they crave

E-retailer Wine.com launched a mobile app right before Christmas that lets its customers save favorite wines in virtual cellars, create shopping lists, and view winemaker notes and label images. More than 100,000 consumers have downloaded the app, which is good for extending the Wine.com brand, says Amy Kennedy, vice president of marketing.
